In the penultimate game of the regular season this past Saturday, an injury ravaged Lansdowne came out on top at home against the Long Island Rugby Club. Long Island broke the ice in the eighth minute as a Lansdowne infringement gave the visitors a shot at goal which they duly converted. But six minutes later, Lansdowne took the lead. A well worked ball passed through the entire back line and ended up in the capable hands of Blake Mannion. Winger Mannion continued his try scoring ways with a beauty in the corner.
In minute 21, Long Island regained the lead with a successful penalty after a Lansdowne infraction. And three minutes later, the Long Islanders lengthened their advantage as they scored a long distance try which they dutifully converted. However, in minute 30, Long Island were caught infringing and the subsequent Sennin Flanagan penalty got the Irishmen to within five. Fullback Flanagan struck again in the 35th minute with another penalty to close the first half scoring.
The second half began with a bang. In minute 42, Man of the Match John Giordano showed great anticipation as he intercepted a pass and flew into goal from 70 meters away. Sennin Flanagan’s conversion gave Lansdowne a 5 point advantage which they would not relinquish. In minute 60, Long Island infringed and Sennin Flanagan continued his torrid kicking by upping the home side advantage to eight points. And just five minutes later, Mr. Flanagan was spot on again with a penalty that closed the numbers.
